Club Notes 27th June

RFL: In an entertaining game of football, the Faughs hosted Aughnamullen in Div1B, Rd8 of the RFL. Played in damp conditions, Aughnamullen got off to a blistering start registering 1-03 without reply after only 5 minutes. The Faughs then rallied and came back strong to lead 1-08 to 1-04 at half time.

The game ebbed and flowed in the second half, with the Faughs keeping the advantage on the scoreboard. There were some great points and passages of play from both teams – the game eventually finished on a scoreline of Faughs 1-12, Aughnamullen 2-7. There were some good strong performances all around the pitch, most notably from Davy McMahon & Damian Hughes.

Féile Peil na nÓg 2017: The annual feile took place last weekend with Castleblayney playing host to the girls from Westport GAA and the boys from O’Donovan Rossa, Belfast.
A number of boys matches were played at St. Marys on the Friday evening, whilst the girls made the trip to Emyvale for their initial set of matches. Saturday morning saw both the girls and boys playing their final section matches here in Castleblayney. Saturday evening was taken up with a BBQ and disco at Iontas with the county match being shown on the big screen. On Sunday the girls travelled to Cavan to play in the semi-final, but were very unlucky not to progress onto the final.
Both the girls and boys played with a lot of heart and determination and no small amount of skill and guts. Unfortunately we did not take home any silverware, but their application and effort certainly bodes well for the future.
Four exciting finals were played out in St. Marys on Sunday, with the Div 5 Cup final between Buttevant (Cork) and Dicksboro (Kilkenny) the pick of them. Dicksboro were two points down at half time but came back well in the second half with the wind behind them and their work rate and willingness to give everything for their team mates set them apart. They didn’t give up and were a credit to their club, parents and mentors.
A fantastic weekend was had by all, with lots of friendships being made along the way. Various teams from throughout the country played at St. Marys’ Park over the course of the weekend: Mayo, Wicklow, Cavan, Kildare, Cork, Armagh, Antrim, Kilkenny, etc…There was plenty of praise from visiting mentors and supporters on how well the pitch and our facilities were looking, so well done everyone involved in any aspect over the weekend – no doubt the players will remember their feile for a very long time.
Many thanks to all the host families who looked after the visiting boys, girls and mentors.
A special mention to Melissa and Brian for all their hard work (as always!) in organising the Feile here in Castleblayney.
