Club Notes November 27th

Operation TransFAUGHSmation – Faughs 5K:
Sunday saw the running of the eight Mc Mahons Supervalu 5K Race in Castleblayney, rain showers didn’t deter nearly 700 runners turning up for the start of the race.

The race which is now established as one of the best races in the North East was packed with a quality field with thirty five clubs being represented on the day as well as a host of other sporting groups.

The Under 14 race started at 1pm which saw the young athletes cover a 2K distance, this race attracted over 175 children who spirited from the start line at the Glencarn Hotel out the Monaghan Road before turning at Castlecool to come back into town, the winner of this race was local Athlete Tom Dogherty from Drumhowan GAC , with local Faughs lads Charlie Mc Quillan and Max Mc Ginnity just piping Adhran Smith from Carrick Aces to a place on the podium .

When it got down to the serious stuff of the Adult Race, there was no hanging about with a fast time always going to be required with course record holder Patrick Hamilton leading the way out the Monaghan Road , Darragh Greene from Dunleer was literally running on his shoulder with Eskander Turki from Monaghan Town Runners making up the group of three. Just after the 4km sign Greene and Hamilton made a break for home and as they entered the final straight the lead swapped twice before defending champion Greene piped Hamilton to retain his title by one second in a time of 15:36 ,Turki followed quickly to claim third spot.

First female home was Denise Toner from Clones AC in a time of 18:19; Nicola Flanagan from the Blayney Rockets was second in 18:40 with Levina Matthews from North East Runners finishing third in a time of 19:39.

After the race all participants and supporters attended a packed Glencarn Hotel where the staff supplied free Tea, Coffee and sandwiches to all. The audience was entertained as Stephen Dignam held a question and answers session with Monaghan All Star GAA Goalkeeper Rory Beggan on how he has developed from been an outfield Club Player to been the best goalkeeper in Ireland .

Next year race date will Sunday the 24th of November 2019, we recommend that you put the date in your Diary; it really is a great occasion. Well done to all.
