Minor Final Beckons For Blayney: There were no slip-ups last Wednesday evening as Blayney Minors advanced to the Division One Minor final when they defeated Clones in St Mary’s Park Castleblayney in the replay of the Minor semi final. Blayney got off to a blistering start hitting 1-4 before Clones raised a flag. A terrific run from Thomas Hughes saw him blast the ball to the Clones net while the points came through Max McGinnity, Niall Rice, Charlie McQuillan and Shea Casey. Clones eventually found their rhythm and responded with four points in a row but before the first water break Blayney hit back with a second goal from Thomas Hughes and another point from top scorer Niall Rice to leave the score 2-5 to 0-4. On resumption of play Blayney found a quick reply with a point from Max McGinnity and a third Blayney goal this time with a dashing run from defender Keelan McMahon to open up an eleven point lead. Before half time Blayney extended their lead with points from Niall Rice (3) and Max McGinnity while Clones sent over two scores to leave the score at the interval Blayney 3-10 Clones 0-6. The game seemed all but over at this stage but on the turnaround Clones made a magnificent rally and hit two goals and a point narrowing the gap to six points and forcing the Blayney keeper John Flanagan to pull off a couple of good saves during this Clones purple patch. This strong recovery by the visitors left Blayney momentarily shell shocked. But they weathered the storm and before the second water break orchestrated a strong response scoring 1-3 to Clones’ single point to put themselves back on an upward trajectory. Blayney points came from Niall Rice (2) and Ben Mallon while Rice’s goal effectively decided the issue. Blayney’s scoring barrage continued in the final period as they tacked on five more unanswered points through Blayney’s top scorer Niall Rice (2), Conor Ruddy, Thomas Hughes, and Max McGinnity. Clones managed a consolation point at the end leaving the final score Blayney 4-18 Clones 2-9. Blayney now advance to the final. Team: John Flanagan, Jake McDonald, Ultan McMahon, Callum Campbell.
