Faughs Finish Season On High Note: It was year of mixed fortunes for the Blayney senior side. Having suffered a heavy defeat  by Latton in their opening game of the championship they bounced back to defeat Monaghan Harps, Ballybay and then a dramatic last minute goal by Clontibret saw Blayney suffer a heart breaking defeat  by a single point  and with it their chances of progressing in the senior championship were dashed and they were catapulted in the relegation zone along with Carrick, Magheracloone and Monaghan Harps. But here they showed their mettle coming out undefeated to top of the group. They drew with Magheracloone then defeated  Carrick and last Friday evening assured their Division One status with a strong victory over the Harps. In this final game it was Monaghan who opened the scoring but Blayney quickly orchestrated a strong response to hit three points in a row from Brendan McElroy, David McMahon and Ciaran Hanratty to give them a lead which they never relinquished. The scoreline remained close for the first quarter with both sides swapping points before the first water break, Blayney’s score coming from Dermot Malone. On resumption of play Monaghan continued apace and came back to within a point of Blayney, 0-4 to 0-3. The Harps tenaciously fought hard and effectively with pride and passion in this opening half and Blayney were forced to step up a gear and respond to the highly motivated Harps side. This they did. The Blayney defence held firm  and  over a ten minute period the Faughs scored 1-3 to open up a seven point lead.  The goal came from a move from Dermot Malone to Ciaran Hanratty and a long diagonal pass saw Brendan McElroy take  possession and hit the Monaghan net. The three points all came from the accurate boot of Robbie Hanratty. Undeterred Monaghan hit back  to score two points before the interval leaving the score at half time Blayney 1-7 Monaghan 0-5. But on the turnaround Blayney quickly moved into action to impose themselves  on the game confining Monaghan’s scoring to a single point over the second half period.  Before the second water break Blayney  extended their lead eight points  with Blayney’s scores coming from   Dermot Malone, Robbie Hanratty and  Ciaran Hanratty leaving the score at the second water break  Blayney 1-10 Monaghan 0-5  and there was really no way back for this gallant Harps side. There was a long stoppage of the game in the last period to attend to the injured Monaghan man Shane Smith who sustained a goalmouth-scramble injury and had to retire. When play resumed Blayney picked up where they left off and added two more point to their tally through Robbie Hanratty and Brendan McElroy. Monaghan did manage to pull back a point before the end to leave the final score Blayney Faughs  1-12 Monaghan Harps  0-6.  Blayney Team: Jason Walsh, Mark Kelly, Colin Merrick, Fergal Malone, Brian Flanagan, Barry Hanratty, Joey Hughes, Mark Treanor, Josh Walsh, Martin McElroy, David McMahon (0-1), Robbie Hanratty (0-5), Ciaran Hanratty (0-2) Dermot  Malone (0-2)  Brendan  McElroy (1-2)Subs used: Kevin Macken, Josh Mone,

Blayney Win Under 17 Championships Back To Back: For the first time in over thirty years Blayney won Division One Minor Championships  (now under 17) back to back, when they decisively defeated Scotstown at Cremartin last Sunday afternoon.  Not since 1988 and ’89 did Blayney pull off such a feat and only four times in the past has the club achieved this rare accolade. Coming into this final as 2020 minor champions the young Blayney side,  once again under the  tutelage  of Declan Loughman, Aidan Tavey, Aaran McNamara, Damien Hughes and Raymond Tavey,  overwhelmed  the Blues with a rampaging first half that saw them score 0-8 to 0-1 and lay the solid foundations for this very impressive victory. When  Ben Mallon and Max McGinnity  hit the Scotstown net in the opening minutes of the second half the game was effectively over.Blayney got off to a very positive start when in the opening minute Niall Rice sent over the first of his seven point tally in what to be a free-taking exhibition by this young player. His skill and delivery of superb frees was a stunning feature of this impressive display. Max McGinnity sent over Blayney’s second score and before the  first water break Niall Rice added  three more points to leave the score Blayney 0-5 Scotstown nil. At the restart  Scotstown  opened their scoring but this was to be their only score of the first half while Blayney went on to add three more points through Niall Rice, Thomas Hughes and Ultan McMahon to leave the score at half time Blayney 0-8 Scotstown 0-1. On the throw in for the second half Blayney broke the ball and Ben Mallon was on hand to cut through the Scotstown defence to rattle the Blue’s net. Two minutes later Max McGinnity  did likewise and when Nathan McArdle pointed in the 7th minute there was no way back for Scotstown. But in spite of the odds now being stacked against them this gallant young Scotstown side tossed aside any notion of a done-deal finish and tenaciously set about driving at Blayney. They pushed up hard and limited Blayney’s kick out options  as they lifted their game to find a real purple patch  which saw them hit three points in a row  going into the second water break. They then picked up o where they left off with another good point and Blayney for the first time were pressed into their shell. Had Scotstown put away more of the chances they created they well have come much closer to the winners.  But a Shay Casey point in the 22nd minute momentarily lifted the siege.  Though Scotstown came back with two more points, Blayney’s Canice Murphy with a brilliant piece of ball play manoeuvred his way around the Scotstown defence to hit his side’s third goal and that was it. Before the finish Niall Rice and Max McGinnity added two more  points  with Scotstown having the final say with a good point to leave the score at the finish  Blayney 3-13 to 0-8. In this high scoring game full credit must also go to the very impressive Blayney defence in which great displays came from goalkeeper John Flanagan. Charlie McQuillan at full back was a tower of strength and key man in this Blayney rearguard  while Callum Campbell and Jake McDonald played their part and tightly marshalled their men. Ultan McMahon locked down the centre back spot with some impressive score getting driving runs while his brother Keelan gave an eye catching a tour de force display at wing back ably supported by winger Nathan McArdle another score getting defender. Ben Mallon and Joe Carey covering acres of ground for most part controlled the centre field area while up front at centre forward  another rising Blayney star, team captain Thomas Hughes gave a conspicuous performance. Wing half forwards Canice Murphy and Conor Ruddy showed their talent with impressive displays. Consistent score getter Max McGinnity was well to the fore as was Shea Casey while full forward Niall Rice once again showed his full range of talent. Martin Joyce played an impressive part when he entered the fray while Ross Maguire and Josh Conlon played their part in this noted victory.  Team; John Flanagan, Callam Campbell, Charlie McQuillan, Jake McDonald, Nathan McArdle (0-1), Ultan McMahon (0-1), Keelan McMahon, Ben Mallon (1-0), Joe Carey, Conor Ruddy, Thomas Hughes (0-1), Canice Murphy (1-0), Max McGinnity (1-2), Niall Rice )-7), Shea Casey (0-1).
