Faughs Finish Season On High Note: It was year of mixed fortunes for the Blayney senior side. Having suffered a heavy defeat by Latton in their opening game of the championship they bounced back to defeat Monaghan Harps, Ballybay and then a dramatic last minute goal by Clontibret saw Blayney suffer a heart breaking defeat by a single point and with it their chances of progressing in the senior championship were dashed and they were catapulted in the relegation zone along with Carrick, Magheracloone and Monaghan Harps. But here they showed their mettle coming out undefeated to top of the group. They drew with Magheracloone then defeated Carrick and last Friday evening assured their Division One status with a strong victory over the Harps. In this final game it was Monaghan who opened the scoring but Blayney quickly orchestrated a strong response to hit three points in a row from Brendan McElroy, David McMahon and Ciaran Hanratty to give them a lead which they never relinquished. The scoreline remained close for the first quarter with both sides swapping points before the first water break, Blayneyโs score coming from Dermot Malone. On resumption of play Monaghan continued apace and came back to within a point of Blayney, 0-4 to 0-3. The Harps tenaciously fought hard and effectively with pride and passion in this opening half and Blayney were forced to step up a gear and respond to the highly motivated Harps side. This they did. The Blayney defence held firm and over a ten minute period the Faughs scored 1-3 to open up a seven point lead. The goal came from a move from Dermot Malone to Ciaran Hanratty and a long diagonal pass saw Brendan McElroy take possession and hit the Monaghan net. The three points all came from the accurate boot of Robbie Hanratty. Undeterred Monaghan hit back to score two points before the interval leaving the score at half time Blayney 1-7 Monaghan 0-5. But on the turnaround Blayney quickly moved into action to impose themselves on the game confining Monaghanโs scoring to a single point over the second half period. Before the second water break Blayney extended their lead eight points with Blayneyโs scores coming from Dermot Malone, Robbie Hanratty and Ciaran Hanratty leaving the score at the second water break Blayney 1-10 Monaghan 0-5 and there was really no way back for this gallant Harps side. There was a long stoppage of the game in the last period to attend to the injured Monaghan man Shane Smith who sustained a goalmouth-scramble injury and had to retire. When play resumed Blayney picked up where they left off and added two more point to their tally through Robbie Hanratty and Brendan McElroy. Monaghan did manage to pull back a point before the end to leave the final score Blayney Faughs 1-12 Monaghan Harps 0-6. Blayney Team: Jason Walsh, Mark Kelly, Colin Merrick, Fergal Malone, Brian Flanagan, Barry Hanratty, Joey Hughes, Mark Treanor, Josh Walsh, Martin McElroy, David McMahon (0-1), Robbie Hanratty (0-5), Ciaran Hanratty (0-2) Dermot Malone (0-2) Brendan McElroy (1-2)Subs used: Kevin Macken, Josh Mone,
