Gary O’Hanlon special guest at McMahons SuperValu Castleblayney 5KM

Continuing with the tradition of a special guest speaker at the results presentation, the organisers of the Castleblayney 5km are delighted to announce that this year’s guest speaker will be top Irish athlete and Coach Gary O’Hanlon. Gary is known nationally as a prolific runner who has claimed numerous titles over recent years for many distances, ranging from 5km right up to the Ultra distance of 50k where he is the national record holder and represented Ireland at the World championships in Doha. Gary also completed the London Marathon in 2016 in a time of 2.21, just outside the Olympic qualifying time for the marathon, not bad at the age of 42. As well as an athlete himself, Gary is a coach to many others where he guides them in individual plans in which to reach their goals and he holds regular group coaching sessions including in the Phoenix Park and for Dunboyne AC. His achievements are all the more remarkable considering that as a very promising 17 year old he was involved in a near fatal road traffic accident, that restricted his development as an athlete for many years. As well as coaching runners, Gary was also recently part of the Maghery GFC coaching team that lead the side to their first ever Armagh Senior football championship. One of his top students is his father, Stephen, who took up running at the age of 69 and now aged 72 competes in regular races and has completed his 3rd Dublin City Marathon.

Gary will be in the Glencarn Hotel and present for the 5km race which takes place on Sunday 27th November at 2pm. Registration available online from the website or via the link on the clubs Facebook page and website. Pre-reg is only €10 to cover the entry fee for the fast 5km course which is chip timed with all runners getting a very special finishers medal with category prizes up for grabs. This year also sees a 2km kids race for U14 with a 1pm start and only costs €5, entry on the day in the Glencarn Shopping centre. Hope to see you all there.
