RFC Platinum Tanks McKeown Cup Final: Our Reserves put in a great display of heart and determination in winning the McKeown Cup on Sunday past.
In decent footballing conditions and on a perfect pitch the lads lined out against Scotstown in Cremartin. To live up to cliches, this certainly was a game of two halves and proof that goals really do win matches. Scotstown started of the strongest and were 4 points up before Ronan McNamara opened the scoring for the Faughs in the 7th minute. Scotstown were dominant and remained in control – it took quite a bit of time for our lads to get up with the speed of the game. By the 20th minute we were down by 5, 0-08 to 0-03 and things were looking ominous. The lads kept working at it and were rewarded with a goal by Joey Hughes in the 27th minute. This provided hope for us and we went in at half time a point down 0-09 to 1-05.
The second half was a completely different affair – we got a goal in the first minute from Gavin Kelly and things started to move in our favour. We become totally dominant and the use of quick direct ball definitely made a big difference. We scored a further 3 goals in the second half and kept turning over the points whilst keeping Scotstown on the back foot. The match ended with a great win on a scoreline of Scotstown 0-13, Faughs 5-12. Captain Aidan deservedly lifted the cup to rousing applause and gave a fitting speech. Well done to all the team and management for a fantastic win.
