Senior Championship: It’s all down to the wire for the Faughs now as they prepare for their final game of the season against Donaghmoyne with a lot riding on it. Indeed it also came down to the wire last Saturday as Blayney met reigning county champion Clontibret in a ding dong battle as both sides fought tenaciously to the end, in this high stakes clash at Cremartin, with Clontibret edging it by two points at the finish. Tough and uncompromising was the feast of football that was served up last weekend with both sides creating great goal chances and at the end of the hour it was all square forcing the game into extra time and it lost none of its fervour during the extra period. In the opening hour it was a drawn game on five occasions and in the extra twenty minutes, the sides were all square four times with no one calling the outcome. Clontibret opened the more brightly with Blayney managing only a single Dermot Malone point to Clontibret’s three. Then a Martin McElroy goal, as the game went into the second quarter gave Blayney the lead and impetus to set their game alight. Conor McManus levelled for Clontibret and over the remainder of the quarter Clontibret hit three points to Blayney’s two, through Mark Treanor and Martin McElroy to the leave the score at the 1-4 Clontibret 0-7 at half time. The Faughs momentarily went back in front with a Ciaran Hanratty point but this third quarter saw Clontibret pull away hitting four points in a row to open up a three point by the end of the third period. Then Blayney came thundering back in this last quarter hitting four points from Dermot Malone (2), Martin McElroy and Craig Callan to leave the score at full time Blayney 1-9 Clontibret 0-12 and forcing the game into extra time. Clontibret opened the first half of extra time very strongly scoring three points to Blayney one and that one came from Brendan McElroy. The sides then swapped points twice before the break with Blayney’s scores coming from Ciaran Hanratty and Darren Daly leaving it 1-12 to 0-16 at the interval. But it was nip and tuck for the final period of this intense game as the sides went full out for victory. Brendan McElroy quickly equalised for Blayney then the sides exchanged points twice with Dermot Malone scoring both Blayney points leaving the game on level terms and on the proverbial knife edge going into final minutes. But Clontibret once more found the edge and broke again to take a two point lead. Try as Blayney might, with every man giving it his all in all quarters, they could not bridge that final gap. They came close as Mark Treanor’s shot from the right corner bobbed around the Clontibret goalmouth for a possible dramatic finish but was eventually cleared leaving the score at the end of this herculean battle Clontibret 0-20 Blayney 1-15. Blayney team: Kieran Duffy, Kealan Duffy, Mark Kelly, Fergal Malone Brian Flanagan, Josh Walshe, Mark Hanratty, Barry Hanratty, Mark Treanor (0-1), Robbie Hanratty, Dermot Malone (0-5), Joey Hughes, Ciaran Hanratty (0-2), Darren Daly (0-1), Marty McElroy (1-3). Subs used: Brendan McElroy (0-2), Craig Callan (0-1), Dermot McArdle, Josh Mone, Ethan McCann.
Speedy recovery: We wish Darren McDonnell and Cillian Lavelle of Clontibret Club speedy recoveries after picking up serious injuries in the senior Championship encounter at the weekend.
