Club Notes September 11th

Greenfield Foods SFC: We took on Clontibret for a place in the semi-final on Saturday past at a showery Inniskeen. In the first part of a double header, the Faughs started off brightly and were rewarded with scores on the board with some good play in the first half.

‘Blayney were the more efficient team throughout the first half. A green flag, raised early in the first half, was the difference between the teams for a good part of the match. We were fortunate to keep out Clontibret on several occasions when a goal looked to be on. The second half was a tense affair with the Faughs maintaining the advantage but in a classic smash and grab, Clontibret managed to find the net near the end of normal time. The Faughs had to fight back and bring the game into extra time. The two periods of ten minutes were again a nail-biting affair with both teams looking for the win. Clontibret managed to gain the advantage towards the end of the second period and were eventual winners on a scoreline of Clontibret 1-15, Castleblayney 1-13. We now move into the backdoor with a game against Magheracloone this coming Friday at 8.15pm in Inniskeen.
Castleblayney: P McBennett, E McCann, B Hanratty, F Rafter, K Duffy, C Brady, F Malone, M Treanor 0-2, J Beattie, P Tavey, D McArdle, B Flanagan, P Finnegan, D Malone 0-2 (1f), M McElroy 1-8 (0-5f). Subs: M Kelly 0-1 for P Tavey, C Hanratty for P Finnegan, J Walsh for F Rafter. In extra time: D McMahon for C Brady, B McElroy for J Beattie.

U14 Girls Division 1 Championship Final: Monday evening saw our U14 girls take on Carrickmacross in the Division 1 Championship Final. While the evening was grey and damp it neither dampened the enthusiasm of the players or the supporters who came in great numbers to Aughnamullen. The match started with both teams showing intent on winning. Carrick playing with a breeze opened the scoring with a nice point from play. It took a few more moments for the Blayney girls to settle the nerves but did so soon after with a point. The game opened up then for Blayney who pushed forward and put 3 goals passed the Carrick defense. Carrick tried in vein to get going and as they came forward they met a Blayney team from goal keeper to full forward who closed every door on them. Half time saw Blayney head in leading on a comfortable lead of 5-1 to 1 point. At the restart Blayney again showed their dominance adding another few points and two further goals. Carrick added a couple more points to their tally but it was a night for the girls in the Green and Gold.
A spectacular performance all through the championship from these young ladies. A group of girls who management say are a pleasure to coach and be involved with. A deserving win for all the hard work and the disappointment over the years on losing finals. Congrats to everyone involved, another win for a club who is building a nice reputation for themselves in ladies football.

Blayney now play Magheracloone at home this Thursday evening at 6.15pm while Aughnamullen meet Carrickmacross in the other semifinal on Friday evening. The very best of luck to the girls and management in the semifinal.
Training continues, and details are as usual texted to parents

U12 Boys: Our U12’s travelled in confident mood to take part in the Bailieborough blitz. Accompanied by their management team and some of the parents, the lads represented the green and gold with aplomb. Despite some good opposition, the Faughs finished top of the pile and deservedly took home the silverware. Congratulations to all involved.

U11 Boys: Our U11 Boys made the journey to Tyholland for the annual tournament blitz. THis was one of the last games for this group of lads for this season. They played some marvellous football with plenty of skill hard work and determination on show. THe Faughs made great progress and reached the Final, but unfortunately this was just a hurdle too far. Well done to the players and their mentors.
